Why use the Stellaris?
Ok so a few people have been asking why we have used a totally different system to start cataloging the information on Black Prophecy. The Encyclopedia Stellaris allows the wiki whilst in its infancy (and whilst there is a lack of knowledge) to store all the information relating to the Lore in one easy to access place. Using the Stellaris people are able to find the information quickly and easily, and makes the pages longer and more interesting as there is more than just one article on a page.
What are the downsides to use the Stellaris? Well one of the biggest problems imho is that there is no dedicated page to the discussion of any one article, instead they would need to be discussed within the page discussion, and sub-headed. Another problem is the issue with linking the articles, this has been partially solved through the {{Link}} template, which links directly to the article required, however it is a clunky solution to a problem.
Why did the wiki team decide this route? On our previous wiki the nc-wiki, we found that even after being a long established site, and with a reasonable number of articles we still found that a lot of pages were orphaned (this means the page exists but nothing links to it). Using the Stellaris allows Lore, which would otherwise not be linked too, to be stored in one place thats easily accessible, without creating a lot of stubs.
What is the future for the Stellaris? I personally plan to see the Stellaris through until the games goes into Beta and more information is pushed into the public domain, I feel that it allows the Lore to be stored in a quick and convenient way without creating lots of simple uninteresting orphaned pages. But obviously this is now where we need the community input - What do you think about the Stellaris? Keep it or remove it? And give us a reason why! -- δφ (delphi) 13:43, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- My thoughts. Well it's early days, let's keep this running for a little while, until at least after beta. My worries are that it will be tricky to find things. At this time there is a short entry for Jadd Barran which is fine. However, over time Jadd and his faction will be having a big part in the game, that the olde' Pirate will be too big for the J section of the Stellaris...Yarr! (Ahem!)
- So I think.
- Keep things as there are until after Beta.
- Consider splitting any big and detailed articles into their own pages..
- ...while keeping the article in the Stellaris small, and short to the point with links to the bigger articles.
